2025 Houseplant Predictions
As 2024 draws to a close, the plant community is abuzz with predictions for the popular houseplants of 2025. What do you anticipate will dominate the market? Current trends indicate a strong preference for easy-to-care-for houseplants in the upcoming year.
Here are the top plants I discovered through my research for the 2025 predictions:
Philodendron Birkin
Recently, I have noticed a surge in the presence of the Philodendron Birkin, suggesting it may be on the rise in popularity. I personally own one, and it is thriving beautifully. The striking contrast between the thin white veins and the dark emerald green leaves makes this plant particularly eye-catching. Care for this plant is straightforward: it thrives in bright, indirect light and should be watered when the top inch of soil feels dry.ZZ Plant
The ZZ plant is celebrated as the ultimate low-maintenance houseplant, and it is also relatively affordable. It flourishes in indirect sunlight and should be watered when the top three inches of soil dry out, allowing you to enjoy its stunning beauty with minimal effort. Be mindful of watering, as overwatering can harm this plant. There are various ZZ plant varieties, including those with green or black leaves (such as the Raven). I have a ZZ Raven positioned near my desk by the window.Anthuriums
Across social media platforms, there are predictions that Anthuriums will gain significant popularity in 2025. Surprisingly, I do not yet own an Anthurium, but I find researching plants fascinating. The diversity of this plant is quite overwhelming, featuring various leaf shapes and colored spathes. Notably, these plants are climbers, which was new information for me. For optimal care, Anthuriums thrive in bright, indirect light and require a well-draining, chunky soil mixture. They also enjoy humidity, so having a humidifier nearby can be beneficial.Snake Plant
The Snake plant consistently appears on any top plant list, and for good reason. Its reliability, ease of care, and aesthetic appeal make it a beloved addition to any space. NASA has even recognized it for its air-purifying qualities. With a wide range of varieties available, I have a small collection of Snake plants and am always eager to add more. Their care is simple: avoid overwatering and ensure they receive adequate light, as they can thrive with minimal attention. Water when half the soil dries out or when the leaves begin to appear floppy.Hoyas
It is no surprise that Hoyas are included on this list, given their numerous varieties that cater to diverse plant enthusiasts. Their beautiful blooms are a highlight, and I hope my Hoya carnosa will flower in the spring. Caring for Hoyas is relatively easy; they require indirect light and should be watered thoroughly only when completely dry. As tropical plants, they thrive in high humidity, making a humidifier a valuable addition for their care. With proper conditions and occasional fertilization, they are likely to bloom.
Honorable Mentions:
Terrariums
Local plant shops, such as Terrarium in Portland, Maine, offer workshops for creating terrariums. During my visit, I crafted my own terrarium filled with tiny plants, rocks, moss, and even miniature animal figurines. The price varies based on container size, but there are numerous options available, and I highly recommend visiting this shop if you're in Portland.Tiny Plants
For those living in compact spaces, tiny plants present a practical option for plant lovers who wish to avoid overwhelming their environment. I find tiny plants to be particularly charming!Downsizing Plant Collection
I can personally relate to the need to downsize my plant collection. I’ve reached my limit at 50 plants; exceeding this number often leads to cramped conditions and plant distress. With rising costs, many individuals may find it prudent to reduce their collections to maintain stability and manageability.
Wishing you all a wonderful New Year!
And may your plants thrive and your heart finds joy in their leafy presence!
